Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to commonly asked questions that customers have had prior to purchasing.

SurvivalNet is similar to a wifi router, except instead of providing access to the outside internet, it provides access to a set of internal datasets that can be accessed from any wifi-capable device using a web browser.

Simply plug it in using the supplied power cord and wait a few minutes for it to start up. Then, connect to the wifi hotspot called "SurvivalNet" using your PC, phone, tablet or other device. Once connected, visit http://survivalnet and that's it! You're connected and browsing your own personal offline version of the internet.

The most recent version of SurvivalNet (version 1.1) has information from public-domain and other resources as of January 1st, 2024. That being said, most survival information contained on SurvivalNet will always be relevant regardless of how old it is - like how to tie various knots or ammo reloading specs. Only a small percentage of information would be helpful to be all the way up to date for survival and preparedness purposes.

Yes! You can use 3rd party (or the supplied adapters for the Pro model) to connect your SurvivalNet to an HDMI display and UDB mouse / keyboard. For the USB, you will either need to have a USB hub for multiple USB connections, or a mouse/keyboard combo that is on a single USB dongle.

Please note: browsing SurvivalNet will be much faster using a more powerful device such as a PC as opposed to directly on the Raspberry Pi. It’s recommended to use direct access only when remote access is not possible.

Yes, you can absolutely make something similar yourself using all of the same free datasets and software. But make no mistake, it will require some technical skill, and several hours of your time to get even a basic setup up and running. Even the earliest versions of SurvivalNet had countless development hours and hardware costs.

That being said, for customers that have the skill and desire to modify their own SurvivalNets after purchasing - feel free!. It can be really rewarding and fun to add other datasets and sources that are more personalized. Even if it's just a vault of addon USB sticks.

USB drives! Every SurvivalNet comes with a USB adapter so you can plug in any USB drive directly into the comptuer and access it through the web interface from any connected device. Perfect for PDFs, Images, Videos, Music, and more!

I'll never forget a few years back when we lost power for over 2 weeks and even cell service was down. We had nothing. It was a scary preview of what could happen at any time. I sure wish I had SurvivalNet back then, but I'm even happier I have it now. Thank you for making this. You're a hero.

Chris W.

This thing is so freaking cool. I don't think most people realize how reliant upon access to information we have become. This is an essential item for the rucksack, and a no brainer in my opinion.

Patrick A.

I use this when I go camping and there's limited cell service. It's so nice to have access to this kind of information when you're "disconnected"!

Shane S.

I know that in an extreme situation there likely wouldn't be as much time to use the internet, but having SurvivalNet still gives me the me peace of mind that if I did need to look something up, I would be able to.

Mark E.
